I-43 North-South Construction Update

About the Project:

The I-43 North-South Reconstruction project spans 14 miles from Silver Spring Drive north to WIS 60, in Milwaukee and Ozaukee counties. WisDOT is reconstructing I-43 to modern design standards and adding a lane in each direction. Additionally, five interchanges along the corridor will be reconstructed:

  • Good Hope Road
  • Brown Deer Road (constructing a new Diverging Diamond Interchange)
  • County Line Road (constructing a new full-access interchange
  • Mequon Road
  • Pioneer Road (County C)

This project also includes:

  • Construction of a brand-new interchange at Highland Road
  • Replacement of the Union Pacific Railroad bridge over I-43 in Glendale
  • Expansion of Port Washington Road in Glendale between Bender and Daphne roads

Progress Overview:

County Line Road Segment:

  • Donges Bay Road, between County W (Port Washington Road) and just east of La Cresta Drive is scheduled to reopen in late September.
  • Katherine Drive, north of Port Washington Road, is scheduled to close for approximately two months, shortly following the reopening of Donges Bay Road.
  • Port Washington Road, between Port Washington Lane and County Line Road is scheduled to reopen early 2023.
  • County Line Road entrance ramp to I-43 South is to remain closed through mid-2023.
  • I-43 North exit ramp to Port Washington Road is to remain closed through mid-2023.

North End Segment:

  • Highland Road, between County W (Port Washington Road) and Lake Shore Drive is scheduled to reopen early October.
  • Highland Road Interchange ramps are scheduled to open to traffic late November.

What to expect to begin in early 2023:

County Line Road Segment:

  • Close and rebuild County Line Road between Pheasant Lane and Port Washington Road through mid-2023.
  • Southbound and northbound mainline freeway reconstruction just north and south of County Line Road.
  • Close Port Washington Lane near County Line Road intersection through mid-2023.
  • Reopen County Line Road entrance ramp to I-43 South in mid-2023.
  • Reopen I-43 North exit ramp to Port Washington Road in mid-2023.
  • Open Katherine Drive entrance ramp to I-43 North in mid-2023.
  • Open I-43 South exit ramp to Port Washington Road in mid-2023.

Mequon Road Segment:

  • Begin reconstruction of Mequon Road interchange 
    • Long-term lane closures on Mequon Road between Port Washington Road and Union Pacific Railroad.
    • Shoulder closures on I-43 South for temporary widening.

North End Segment:

  • Southbound and northbound mainline freeway reconstruction.
  • Close and rebuild the County C (Pioneer Road) bridge and ramps.
  • Short-term closures of Highland Road ramps (not concurrent with County C Ramps).
