Bird City Wisconsin is a new initiative to encourage conservation of birds and habitat preservation and restoration. The program's goal is to encourage communities in Wisconsin to implement sound bird conservation practices by offering public recognition to those that succeed in (a) enhancing the environment for birds and (b) educate the public about the interactions between birds and people and about the contributions birds make to a healthy community. The City of Mequon continues to participate in Bird City Wisconsin since 2014 and currently holds the Bird City designation.

Did You Know?

The two biggest killers of birds are windows and cats. Birds fly into windows as they seek vegetation reflected in the glass.  After windows, roaming and feral cats are the next largest cause of bird mortality.  For this reason, many organizations encourage people to keep their cats indoors.  Visit the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) Cats Indoors!Campaign for more information.

Over a million birds are killed each year from flying into windows that reflect greenery and the sky.  Read more about how you can protect birds against window strikes.
