Common Council

The Common Council, comprised of the Mayor and eight aldermen, is the legislative and policy-making body of the City of Mequon. Council members are elected for three-year terms. The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the City, ensuring that ordinances and state laws are observed and enforced and that all officers and employees discharge their duties. Additionally, the Mayor is the head of the fire and police departments. The Mayor chairs meetings of the Council and its finance-personnel committee. The Mayor recommends policies to the Council and breaks tie votes. The Mayor may veto legislation.

Each Council member serves on at least one of the Council’s four standing committees. These standing committees make recommendations to the full body regarding municipal projects, facilities, services, finance and personnel and the community’s health, safety and welfare. Additionally, all members of the Council serve as sewer and water commissioners and as members of the City’s budget-writing committee. The Council also has representatives on the City’s planning commission and park and library boards.

The Council is advised and assisted in its duties by the City Administrator and other staff. Additionally, the Council relies on input from residents and recommendations from many volunteer citizen committees to ensure a citizen-centered process.

Common Council meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Christine Nuernberg Hall at City Hall (11333 N. Cedarburg Road, Mequon, WI).
