Building Permit Information - Commercial, Industrial, Agricultural & Multi-Family

All commercial properties must go through plan review first from E-Plan Exams or State before submitting to the City of Mequon for a building permit.  If you have any questions about this, please contact Karen Heil at 262-236-2924.

The City of Mequon follows the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services -- Commercial Building Administrative Code

The following items need to be submitted to obtain a building permit:

  • Building Permit Application (see attachment)
  • Three sets of the original State approved plans that have the "red" stamp or electronic stamp on the cover page. Also, the State Approval Letter must be stapled to the front page of the plans.
  • Commercial Zoning Form (see attachment)

Once you submit the application and plans, allow 1-2 weeks for the permit to be issued.  No work should be started until the permit has been issued.

For new commercial or additions, contact the Engineering Department for Erosion Control Permit -  262-236-2934

The following inspections are required:

  • Erosion/Graveled drive
  • Footings
  • Foundation walls
  • Column pads
  • Slab
  • Rough
  • HVAC
  • Insulation
  • Building above the ceiling before the ceiling tile are dropped in
  • Sprinkler system by the Fire Department
  • Building Final

A Final Occupancy Permit will not be issued until all inspections have been completed and the Final Occupancy Permit has been paid for.

A contractor performing work without a permit will be penalized at twice the permit fee. Work that is covered up before an inspection is done may have to be exposed so that the work can be inspected.
