2019 Sanitary Sewer Service Area Amendment

A number of parcels received an exemption for the 2018 charges by the City of Mequon Sewer Tax District, and respective properties are eligible to be excluded from future sewer charges via removal from the Sanitary Sewer Service Area.  The City of Mequon Sewer Utility District Commission (SUDC) and Common Council approved Resolution 3558 to exempt certain properties from associated charges.

On March 19, 2019 the City of Mequon Sewer Utility District Commission (SUDC) voted to approve Resolution 3610 to continue exemptions for certain properties from associated charges.  In addition, the SUDC voted to approve Resolution 3609 to remove certain parcels from the Mequon Sewer Tax District and Sanitary Sewer Service Area.  On April 9, 2019 the SUDC recommendations will be voted on by the City of Mequon Common Council at 7:30 p.m. and public comments are welcome prior to this vote.

The subsequent steps include petitioning Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) and Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District (MMSD) for removing respective properties from the Sanitary Sewer Service Area, and requiring installation of a private system.  As a result, a private onsite wastewater treatment system may be the only reasonable or feasible alternative to service respective parcels because of access to the nearest sanitary sewer.

A public information meeting was held Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in Nuernberg Hall at City Hall to discuss the proposed Sanitary Service Area Amendment.  At the meeting, the implications of requesting to remain in the City Sewer Tax District were discussed and that includes incurring future sewer charges.  Once parcels are removed out from the City of Mequon Sewer Tax District and Sanitary Sewer Service Area those parcels will not be allowed to connect to the public system.

The City is requesting that property owners complete the Sewer Utility Tax Exemption Form and indicate their respective preference for one of two options:  "Yes, prefer removal from the City Sewer Tax District," or "No, prefer the opportunity to remain in the utility service area and incur charges."  These completed forms can be returned to the Engineering Division at City Hall or by email to engineering@ci.mequon.wi.us.
