Ethics Board

Mission
The mission of the Ethics Board is to assure that public officials and employees remain independent, impartial and responsible to the public, do not use their public office for personal gain and maintain the confidence of the public in the integrity of its government.

Purpose
The board shall advise the common council with respect to appropriate rules of ethics which shall govern city officials and employees in their duties and shall administer the city ethics code including rendering advisory opinions, undertaking investigatory inquiries and conducting enforcement hearings.

Membership
The board shall consist of nine citizen members.  Each alderman shall nominate a resident of his or her aldermanic district, and the mayor shall nominate a resident of any aldermanic district.  The term of each member shall be coterminous with the term of the nominating elected official.  No member may be an elected official, a person appointed to elective office, an appointed official whether exempt or nonexempt, or a city employee, and no member may serve on any other city board, commission or committee.  If during his or term,  a member no longer resides in the district from which he or she was appointed but continues to reside in the city, he or she may serve until a successor is duly appointed.  The board shall elect a chair and vice-chair from among its members at its first meeting each year following the common council organizational meeting.

Meetings of the Board
Meetings of the board are held on an as needed basis or at the call of the chair.
