Public Safety

Safety is our priority.

We all want the finer things in life. Love, comfort and safety are at the top of everyone's list. Safety isn't a problem a problem for residents of Mequon. The City is routinely rated one of the safest places to live in Wisconsin by SafeWise.com and Alarms.org. These two organizations review the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics and calculate  the likelihood of violent crimes and property crimes occurring per 1,000 people in each city. On top of City's strong commitment to public safety, the Mequon is also actively involved with regional, state, and national partners  in combating opioid addiction—a problem that has become a national epidemic.

No small part of the City's public safety is due to the efforts of the Mequon Police Department to work with the community. Each year the Mequon Police Department offers free or low costs public safety training courses to business and residents. Below is a list of public safety courses offered every year.

  1. Active Shooter Training - Officers from the Mequon Police Department will be hosting an informational/training program on Civilian Response to Active Shooter/Hostile Intruder Incidents. This presentation will demonstrate the training that is available to area businesses, organizations, and clubs, free of charge from the Police Department. This presentation is so those administrators and supervisors can see and experience, first hand, the training that is available to be conducted for all their employees/members at their site. The course is also open to any Mequon resident interested in this type of training.
  2. Boating Safety Course - The Department sponsors a DNR boating safety course held in the spring of each year at the Mequon Safety Building. Persons born after January 1, 1989, must take the course before they will be able to drive a boat alone in the state of Wisconsin. The course is 8 hours in length (2 hours per night); upon completion of the class, students from age 12 may operate a motor boat by themselves with parental permission.  The course fee is $10.00 and includes all materials.
  3. Citizens Police Academy - The academy is six weeks long and usually meets on Thursday evenings.  Classes are held at the Mequon Police Department and are free of charge to Mequon/Thiensville residents and employees of Mequon/Thiensville businesses.  Academy participants receive an inside look into the Police Department. Participants receive hands on training and class demonstrations on a wide variety of police topics.
