Common Council Confirms October Meeting Dates
Beginning next week, the Mequon Common Council will be convening three separate meetings during the month of October. These include a meeting of the Common Council in its role as the Appropriations Committee, to consider the City’s draft budget for Fiscal Year 2020. This meeting, which follows two budget workshop meetings of the Appropriations Committee held in September, is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Additionally, due to the Yom Kippur holiday, the Council’s regular monthly meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 8 has been cancelled, and the Council will hold a Special Common Council meeting the following week, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15. Finally, the Council will also be hosting a series of meetings beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, where it is expected that interviews for the vacant aldermanic seat in District 6 will be completed, and the proposed 2020 budgets for the City’s sewer and water utilities will be considered.

SEWRPC Approves Sewer Boundary Amendment
The Common Council adopted the amendment to the City’s sanitary sewer service area on July 9. Subsequently on September 13, the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) adopted the amendment to the sanitary sewer service area. Now that both SEWRPC and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District have reviewed the amendment, the next step is for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to endorse the change of the regional water quality management plan. At this juncture, no further action is needed by the City.

Once the WDNR sends the endorsement letter to the City, the amendment to the City’s sanitary sewer service area will be in effect. In preparation, staff in the Engineering Division has coordinated with the City’s Community Development Department and the Assessor’s Office to update the geographic information system and database records to reflect the changes from the amendment. The outcome of this process will result in the removal of 154 parcels from the sanitary sewer area. The removed properties will not incur sanitary tax charges and those property owners will be required to use privately owned wastewater treatment systems, such as a holding tank. Lastly, four parcels could not be removed from the sewer service area, due to their unique locations, and those parcels were exempted from City sanitary tax charges.  Please click here to view additional information about the project and SEWRPC’s report.

Rebidding Long-Term Disability Insurance to Save City Money
Assistant to the Finance Director Krueger and Assistant City Administrator Schoenemann are working with Ansay & Associates to rebid the City’s non-medical lines of insurances to ensure the City is being provided with the best value. To date, the rebidding process has revealed the City can offer the same level of long-term disability insurance through a different provider for 27% less. The anticipated savings is about $11,400 annually. The consultants at Ansay & Associates are still in the process of evaluating proposals from the providers. City staff will bring forward a new contract award to the Common Council for consideration once the analysis is complete.
