Mequon Fire Department Issues 2017 Annual Report
Each year the Fire Department issues a report detailing information on Fire Department activities, responses, equipment, facilities, personnel, and operations. In 2017, the Fire Department responded to 2,179 fire and emergency medical calls, which is a 5% increase from 2016 and a 69% increase from five years ago. A few noteworthy accomplishments in 2017 were the completion of a staffing study conducted by the Matrix Consulting Group, the remodeling of the dormitories at both fire stations, a fund-raising effort to purchase video laryngoscopes and the first full year of performing inter-facility transports. Absentee Voting Ballots for February Elections Available Next Week
Residents interested in voting in the 2018 Spring Primary Election by absentee ballot may do so in person during normal business hours (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) from January 30 through February 15 at the City Clerk’s Office. Residents may also register online to have an absentee ballot sent to their residence. 

Real Estate Tax Collection Season Ends February 2 at City Hall
February 2 will mark the end of the tax collection season for paying current real estate taxes at City Hall. Effective February 1, taxpayers may make payments to the Ozaukee County Treasurer’s Office in Port Washington for all remaining real estate property taxes. The City will continue to collect all personal property taxes in perpetuity.

Winter Frolic Set for Next Saturday
The Mequon Nature Preserve’s annual Winter Frolic will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on February 3 at 8200 W. County Line Road. Join fellow community members for Alaskan Malamute dog sled demonstrations, tractor rides, a winter marketplace, bonfires, crafts, and much more! This event is great for all ages. Viewing Party Set for Around the Corner with John McGivern Featuring Mequon & Thiensville
The entire community is invited to a free showing of Around the Corner with John McGivern episode featuring Mequon and Thiensville on Monday, March 12 at Shully’s Cuisine & Events in Thiensville.  Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the preview beginning one hour later. The episode is currently scheduled to broadcast on Milwaukee PBS at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 22. 

News Graphic No Longer Changing Publication Dates
Last week’s bulletin indicated that the News Graphic was going to change its publication dates. However, since then the News Graphic reversed its decision to change publication dates and stated the newspaper will remain on the original publication schedule. No reason was provided for the change in direction. The City will continue to publish notices in the News Graphic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

“Look under the Hood” of the State 2017 – 2019 Budget
​The State of Wisconsin passed a biennial budget in September of 2017. The budget devotes about $2 billion in new revenues principally to three areas: school aid, Medicaid, and property tax relief. The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance published the attached newsletter that breaks down the biannual budget numbers, discusses the State’s fiscal condition, and examines the budget’s priorities.
