Change in Open & Recreational Burning Ordinance
As temperatures get cooler and outdoor campfires are more likely to be enjoyed with family and friends, please keep in mind the recent change in the City’s Open and Recreational Burning Ordinance.  All Fires must always be attended by a responsible party at least 16 years of age and a water source or other extinguishing agent must be readily available.  Only natural materials may be burned and the use of accelerants are not allowed.  Permits are no longer required to have a recreational fire. Recreational fires are defined as a small fire less than four feet in diameter, flames less than two feet in height, and in a noncombustible surround. Recreational fires must also be 25 feet from any structure or combustible material. Outdoor fireplaces or hearths may also be used if placed on and surrounded by non-combustible materials.  All screens and covers must be in place and a 20-foot distance maintained from any structure or other combustible materials.  Lastly, gas or propane style fire-features can be used ten feet from any structures or combustible materials.

Open burning is allowed in the City if the following conditions are met. First, a burn permit must be obtained from the City. They can be purchased online, at City Hall, or at the Public Safety Building.  When burning, the area must be 75 feet from any structure, wooded areas, public thoroughfares, or other combustible materials.  The fire must not exceed six feet in diameter and 4 feet in height, and daily permission is needed by calling the Mequon Fire Department Burn Line at (262) 242-8778.
