40 Acre Woods Restoration Project has Begun at MNP
Mequon Nature Preserve’s (MNP) next restoration project, located west and north of Harvey's woods, has started! The conventional crops of corn and soybeans were harvested for the last time on this 40-acre parcel. In mid-October, staff dug test holes in search of the drain tiles that run throughout this section. An excavator was then used to disable the drain tile, which in turn will prevent ground water from leaving the site. This restores the natural hydrology to the landscape. Native short and tall grass prairie, trees, and shrubs will be planted throughout the parcel next Spring to begin the reforestation process. Make sure to check out the progress in person when hiking the trails off of Swan Road, and follow along on Facebook and Instagram as the project is highlighted.
