COVID-19 Update for the Week Ending Friday, November 13
The City of Mequon, in coordination with the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department and other state and federal agencies, continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19.

  • As of this afternoon, the State has recorded 301,165 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,573  associated deaths. Of the cases in Wisconsin, 3,714 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 28 related deaths have been in Ozaukee County, based on information from the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department (WOPHD).

  • The Department of Health Services has updated its website with holiday health and safety guidance in order to stop the spread of COVID-19 during the festive season.

  • The Better Business Bureau warned of clinical trial frauds via unsolicited messages coming by text, email, or social media. The messages say individuals will receive a payment if they qualify for a clinical trial and include a link to click on that, once clicked, infects the phone or computer with malware. To avoid clinical trial scams: look up the domain, search for the trial on clinicaltrials.gov, never pay to be a part of a trial, and remember clinical trials never ask for financial information.

  • On November 10, Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #94, advising, but not mandating, Wisconsinites to stay home, urges precautions Wisconsinites should take to stay safe if they have to leave their home, and encourages businesses to take additional steps to protect workers, customers, and the surrounding community.

Please help the City limit the spread of COVID-19 in the community by wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, avoiding large gatherings, following proper hygiene practices and staying home when sick.

Fire Department Purchases Mechanical Ventilator
The City of Mequon Fire Department has purchased a mechanical ventilator using CARES Act money. This state-of-the-art medical device will be placed in service after comprehensive training for all paramedics within the Department. Following training and education from Department leadership and physicians from Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee, the ventilator will be used for the care of pulmonary, trauma, and cardiac arrest patients. Mechanical ventilation provides advanced, accurate, and hospital-level ventilation to patients in the field. This mode of ventilation will be replacing bag-mask ventilation, which is done by hand—a technology originating in the 1940s.

Aside from ongoing efforts to modernize prehospital medical care in Mequon, the purchase of this equipment stems from a need to expand interfacility transports to the critical care level, as well as emergency preparedness initiatives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the Mequon Fire Department provides interfacility transports from Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee at the paramedic level. Adding mechanical ventilation will allow the Department to participate in critical care transports of patients with breathing tubes. Additionally, Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee has expressed an anticipated increase in the number of patients requiring mechanical ventilation, or airway

support, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ventilator will allow the Department to care for a broader range of patients, all while improving and modernizing the prehospital medical care for the community.

K-9 Djuke's First Week On the Job
It has been just over a week since K-9 Djuke has been on the job.   During his first week, Djuke has learned to acclimate to life in the squad.   Djuke quickly found his spot in the back-right corner of his kennel where he likes to sit, hang out, and occasionally nap.

During Djuke’s first week, he was called upon to help Ozaukee County and Sheboygan Police Departments to track fleeing suspects from a motor vehicle crash that stemmed from a shooting and police pursuit in Sheboygan.  Djuke was ready to go, however, the suspects were located by the Sheboygan Police Department’s K-9 Unit who were involved in the initial call.  Djuke was also called upon to assist in a hit and run crash within the City, however, the suspect turned himself in prior to Djuke's arrival. Djuke was deployed to sniff several cars for illegal substances, which resulted in recovering a small amount of heroin.  Several pieces of drug paraphernalia were also found.  The suspect tested positive for heroin/fentanyl resulting in felony charges being forwarded to the District Attorney's Office. Djuke is adapting well to being on the road and applying the skills he has learned in training.
