Foot Bridge Repair at the Mequon Public Safety Building Continues on Schedule
In 2018, EMG completed a Facilities Condition Assessment of City-owned facilities. Included in the recommendations for the Public Safety Building was the provision for an architect/engineer to evaluate the masonry of the building envelope and generate a report of findings. In April 2019, RCL Engineering Group produced a report as a result of its inspection to verify the condition of the rusted structure supporting a foot bridge on the east side of the building. Deterioration observed on the steel beams was extensive enough that the installation of a temporary support was recommended and installed at that time.

On January 14, 2020, the Common Council awarded the repair of the failing foot bridge structure to J. H. Hassinger, Inc. of Menomonee Falls and the demolition phase of the project began in mid-March. Installation of the new structural support beam was completed on April 30.  If all continues to go as planned, the project will be completed in the first week of June.

National Police Week Runs May 10 Through May 16
This year, Police Departments will not able to honor fallen law enforcement officers in Washington D.C. due to the Safer at Home Order. In its place, members of the Greater Milwaukee Fire & Police Pipes and Drums will be honoring the fallen by performing as "Lone Pipers" at various Police Headquarters throughout the State of Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 13. At precisely 12:00 midnight, all the bagpipers at those various locations will simultaneously play Amazing Grace in Honor of the Fallen. For a list of the police headquarters where the performance will take place and to learn more about the tradition of the “Midnight Piper” click here.  Additional information on National Police Week can be found here.

Arbor Day Drive-Thru Tree Give-Away a Success
The City’s Arbor Day Celebration previously scheduled to take place on April 26 at River Barn Park was cancelled due to the Safer at Home Order. As an alternative to the annual event, a drive-thru tree give-away was held on Wednesday, April 29 from 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Trees were pre-packaged with two to three pre-determined tree/shrub varieties along with planting and watering instructions. The list of trees and shrubs handed out included: White Cedar, White Pine, Black Cherry, Quaking Aspen, Sugar Maple, Swamp White Oak, American Elderberry, Common Chokecherry, Nannyberry, and Shadblow Serviceberry. Even though it rained most of the day, the event was a success and well attended with over 185 vehicles and 250 tree packages distributed. The remaining trees and shrubs were planted at Grasslynn Nature Preserve and Shoreland Nature Preserve. In all, 850 new trees and shrubs were distributed and/or planted.
