District 8 Aldermanic Vacancy will be Filled by Appointment
The Committee of the Whole, in a unanimous vote Tuesday, affirmed that the Common Council will fill the District 8 Aldermanic vacancy by appointment.  The vacancy was created by former District 8 Alderman, Andrew Nerbun, being elected as the Mayor of Mequon in the April election.  Applications from those interested should be in the form of a letter of interest and resume, and will be accepted in the Clerk’s Department until noon on Friday, June 3.  Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the district.  Those interested will participate in an interview session conducted by the Committee of the Whole at 6:30 P.M. on June 7.  The Committee, once interviews conclude, will make a recommendation to the Council, which will take formal action on the recommendation at the June 14 Council meeting.  The selected candidate will then be sworn and seated at the meeting.  The map for Aldermanic District 8, which occupies the southeast corner of Mequon, can be found here.

The successful appointee will fill the current seat until the April 4, 2023 Spring Election.  The Council originally selected for this to take place in the November Election, but staff identified that a recent change in the statute modified the timing required to order a special election to be held concurrently with the November general election which resulted in missing the deadline to order such an election by one day. Based on the need to send the announcement to the paper for publication next week, it was decided to publish the announcement with notification that the appointed individual would stand for a special election to be called for the spring nonpartisan election cycle (primary in February if needed, and general election in April). This decision was based upon the clear direction from the Council at Tuesday’s meeting that (a) the seat be filled as quickly as possible to ensure representation for the residents of the District, and (b) the appointed person should stand for special election (as opposed to an appointment for the remainder of the term) to ensure that residents of the district were able to directly pick their representation sooner than the end of the term in April of 2024. Therefore, the winning candidate in April 2023 will be up for reelection in April 2024, the expiration of the term of office for the District 8 Alderman.   For more information or to submit your letter of interest and resume, please contact the Clerk’s Department 262-236-2911 or cfochs@ci.mequon.wi.us.

New Chairs Elected to Lead 2 Common Council Committees
On Tuesday, May 10, two of the Common Council's four standing committees elected new chairs for the 2022-23 legislative year, which runs from May-April. District 3 Alderman Dale Mayr was elected to lead the Public Welfare Committee and Kathleen Schneider of the City's 7th District was chosen to head the Public Safety Committee.  The Public Works Committee did not meet this month and will elect its chair at the June Meeting.  The Common Council's fourth standing committee, Finance-Personnel, is chaired (per City ordinance) by Mayor Andrew Nerbun. Summarily, committee chairs are responsible for coordinating agendas and presiding over all meetings held by a committee.  The next series of meetings to be held by the Common Council's four standing committees is tentatively slated for Tuesday, June 14.

City Adopts Water Connection Policy
At its meeting on April 12, the Water Utility Commission adopted its first Water Connection Policy.  At its base, it defines the properties required to connect as those within the Sanitary Sewer Service Area and the Ulao Creek Neighborhood.  In addition, it addresses:

  • Process for properties that are required to connect to request an exception.
  • Identification of connections that can be considered for deferral.
  • Identification of connections that can be considered for exemption.
  • Identification of public infrastructure requirements to extend water main along property lines.

The approved Water Connection Policy is available on the City’s website.

Public Works Department Transitions to Summer Hours
The alternate work hours or "summer" hours for the Department of Public Works (DPW) began Monday, May 9. While warmer weather has been elusive over the past few weeks, the modified work hours allow the Department to take advantage of extended daylight, lower heat indices, reduced traffic flow and increased efficiency on larger scale projects. Into the summer, DPW crews and the DPW Buildings staff will operate Monday through Thursday from 6:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. and Friday from 6:30 A.M. - 10:30 A.M. As work alongside roads increases, the DPW appreciates attentive drivers who ensure crews stay safe.
