COVID-19 Update for the Week Ending Friday, June 19
The City of Mequon, in coordination with the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department and other state and federal agencies, continues to monitor the spread of COVID-19.

  • As of this afternoon, there are now 24,154, reported cases of COVID-19 and 730  associated deaths in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Of the cases in Wisconsin, 209 reported cases of COVID-19 and 15 related deaths are in Ozaukee County, based on information from the Washington/Ozaukee Public Health Department (WOPHD).

  • On Wednesday, June 17, the WOPHD lifted its lockdown order of all long-term care facilities and released new guidance providing for increased capacity levels at businesses and gatherings. A summary of the WOPHD’s latest guidelines can be found in the Department’s press release.

  • Based on an increasing body of evidence, the WOPHD is now recommending that face coverings be worn in any situation where physical distancing is not possible.

  • While a large number of City services are available online, the City continues to offer in-person services to the Community. City Hall is open 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday. The lobby of the Public Safety Building is opening to the public, the Public Works Building is open to the public and East Side Fire Station is open to the public on an as-needed basis.

Marches May Impact Mequon Road Traffic This Weekend
With two protests scheduled to occur in Mequon this weekend, motorists and pedestrians may need to plan alternative travel routes in and around the vicinity of Mequon Road, between Port Washington Road and Buntrock Avenue. The organizers of both protests have assured the City that the protests will be peaceful. They have been asked to use the sidewalks and stay out of the roads, and the organizers have agreed. Police personnel will be on hand to ensure safety.

On Friday, June 19, it is anticipated that there may be traffic impacts along Mequon Road between Cedarburg Road and River Road from approximately 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. On Saturday, June 20, it is anticipated that there may be traffic impacts primarily along Mequon Road between Port Washington Road and Buntrock Avenue from approximately 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Questions or requests for additional information may be directed to the Mequon Police Department’s non-emergency number at (262) 242-3500.

Gateway Promenade Construction Commencing Soon
Mequon-Thiensville Town Center Gateway Committee Chair Connie Pukaite continues to work with Community Development and Finance Department staff to finalize the preparation for construction of the Gateway Promenade.  Currently, it is anticipated that the Moore Construction Services will begin mobilizing in the project area for construction beginning the week of June 29.

Fire Department Receives Updated Public Protection Classification Rating
The Mequon Fire Department underwent a review from the Insurance Service Office (ISO) in January 2020.  On June 4, the Fire Department received its Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of a 4/10 from the ISO. The PPC has a direct effect on the amount of insurance premiums residents and businesses pay on their properties. The 4/10 is unchanged from the previous rating received five years ago. The 4/10 split simply means anyone within five road miles of either fire station has a four (4) as a protection classification and anyone beyond five road miles is considered having a ten (10) or no fire protection rating.

Goats in Rotary Park
The Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club partnered with Ozaukee-Washington Land Trust to bring a herd of goats to Pukaite Woods located in Rotary Park. The goats will eat and completely defoliate over seven acres of buckthorn and brush within two weeks, resulting in removal of the plants by depleting their energy reserves. City residents are welcome to visit Pukaite Woods over the next two weeks to watch the goats feed on buckthorn.

The goats are enclosed in paddocks created by electric fences that may limit access to some trails in the Woods. Adults and children are urged to stay away from the fences.  Temporarily, no dogs are allowed in the woods for the safety of both goats and dogs.

Property owners interested in more information about hiring the goats after they finish clearing buckthorn in Pukaite Woods are encouraged to email:  pukaite@sbcglobal.net  or call (262) 242-2778.

June 9 YouTube Broadcast Interrupted During Last Council Meeting
The YouTube live video stream went down approximately 25 minutes into the Common Council’s meeting on Tuesday, June 9 as a result of YouTube’s copyright algorithm falsely flagging and stopping the City’s broadcast due to copyright concerns. According to YouTube, the algorithm error is impacting several accounts. The City’s live stream on Channel 25 and on the City’s agenda management website were never interrupted. All three platforms have the full video available for viewers. IT staff is looking into the YouTube interruption and monitoring YouTube’s communications for future updates about this algorithm error.

Taste of Mequon Officially Cancelled
On Tuesday, June 9 the Common Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution ratifying the Festivals Committee’s decision to cancel the in-person event considering the global health crisis. The members of the Festivals Committee will be looking at the possibility of creating an alternative event that will continue to promote community spirit and support the local restaurants and businesses.
