Wisconsin DNR Establishes Emergency Erosion Control Authorization Process
In response to near record-high lake levels on Lake Michigan, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently established a streamlined temporary erosion control authorization process that allows homeowners to protect their properties from imminent risk without permitting delays. A brief questionnaire helps a potential applicant determine if a permit is necessary for the actions they are planning to take. The applicant can then follow steps provided in the permit application checklist to apply for an Individual Permit for Great Lakes Erosion Control, if needed. By completing a Self-Certification form, the Department will continue to allow the placement of temporary emergency material to protect a property while a permit is being applied for.

The information provided by the Wisconsin DNR about the Self-Certification process outlines requirements for allowable temporary erosion materials. All information can be accessed via the Wisconsin DNR’s website and applications can be submitted using the DNR’s ePermitting System. The self-certification form is intended for landowners and contractors and was designed to inform the DNR of the strategy that a landowner or contractor plans to use to protect a property so they can move forward with work as soon as the form is submitted. After a coastal property has been stabilized, the DNR will work with applicants on long-term permitting needs. Questions can be directed to any applicant’s county water management specialist listed by clicking here.
