Breathing Air Compressor Reaches End of Life
The Mequon Fire Department maintains a breathing air compressor at station 2 for filling self-contained breathing apparatus bottles.  (The tanks on firefighters’ backs.) The compressor is eight years old and has suffered a major breakdown.  Two different service companies have looked at the compressor and concluded it could not be repaired due to a lack of parts.  The service life of a breathing air compressor should be 15-20 years. The manufacturer of our compressor stopped making this style six years ago.  The Fire Department is currently taking empty bottles for filling to Thiensville, Grafton, or the North Shore Fire Department.  Since this machine failed long before it should have, this will create an unplanned and unexpected capital expenditure.  Fire Department staff is currently researching the cost of a replacement compressor and will bring forward a recommendation to the Public Safety Committee in 2020.
