Police Department Issues Message about Grandchild in Distress Scam Against the Elderly
Over the last two weeks, many agencies in southeastern Wisconsin have received reports of fraud against the elderly.  A suspect will call an elderly individual pretending to be their grandchild that has been involved in some type of incident resulting in legal trouble.  The suspect will request money from the elderly victim to help pay for legal fees.  More recently, this scam has evolved to the point where suspects are now going to residences to collect money in-person. To date, the Police Department has investigated one such incident. Mequon residents are reminded to pay attention to fellow community members, advise them of these types of complaints and to report any suspicious people or vehicles to the Police Department.  If a member of the community observes this type of behavior, please call 911 immediately. Alternatively, if any community member has information to assist the Department, please call the Non-Emergency number at 262-242-3500.
