First Results of 2020 Census Data Released
Every ten years a mandatory counting of people and gathering of information takes places as mandated under Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. census counts every resident in the United States. The data collected by the census determines how the 435 seats in the House of Representatives are divided up among the 50 states. Additionally, the information is used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities. The first results of the 2020 Census were released this past Monday.  The results indicate a 7.4% population gain, the second lowest growth rate since the 1930s. Additional data showed slow growth in the Northeast and Midwest, with gains in the South and Mountain West. The following states will lose one House of Representative seat: California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. States gaining a seat will include Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Caroline, and Oregon.  The state of Texas will gain two seats.  Additional information on demographic and raw population data for counties, cities, and towns will be released on August 16.
