Following PFC Resignations, Search for Next Police Chief Likely to Start Over
City staff became aware of potential violations of Wisconsin’s Open Meetings law by members of the Police and Fire Commission (the “PFC”). In short, two members of the PFC met with one of the candidates for the Police Chief position outside of a publicly noticed meeting and discussed his potential selection as the next Chief. The District Attorney’s Office conducted a thorough investigation of this matter with the help of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office. The two members of the PFC have reached a plea agreement with the District Attorney’s Office relating to these Open Meetings law violations. Subsequently, these two commissioners have chosen to resign. The City is seeking to have the current search terminated and to start a new Police Chief recruitment process. Attached is a statement issued on Wednesday, October 24 from Mayor Abendroth in connection with this matter. Any questions may be directed to the City Administrator’s Office at (262) 236-2941.
