Recreational Beach Forecasts Kick-Off this Week
With Memorial Day a few days away, the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan began its 2018 Beach Services program this week. On Wednesday, the NWS issued its first "Recreational Beach Forecast" of the season. The Recreational Beach Forecast is a detailed forecast of weather and water conditions expected at beaches along Lake Michigan from Sheboygan County south to Kenosha County for the coming day and night. An extended outlook for the following three days is also included. If average wave heights are expected to reach 3 to 5 feet or higher at Lake Michigan beaches, a High Swim Risk is declared. The NWS would then issue a "Beach Hazard Statement," which includes public notification about life-threatening swimming conditions expected for the coming day/night and/or the next day. Forecasts will continue through mid-September; click here for further details.
