City Joins Call to Accelerate I-43 Reconstruction
Earlier this week, Mayor Wirth joined the chief elected officials of Bayside, Fox Point and Glendale in calling for the State to restart the design phase for widening and reconstructing Interstate 43 between Silver Spring Drive and Highway 60 in its next biennial budget. Attached is a letter to the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee (JFC) that was co-signed by the four mayors/village presidents, which also asks the state to fulfill its commitment to constructing a planned interchange at Highland Road here in Mequon. State Representative Jim Ott has subsequently filed a Budget Motion with the JFC, requesting that $20 million be considered for inclusion in the next budget to re-start the I-43 corridor expansion study. Additionally, both the Mayor and staff reached out to local legislators this week requesting that a proposed one-time funding package of $130 million to improve local roads in towns and counties throughout Wisconsin be amended to include all cities and villages as well, which notably, comprise nearly 70% of all municipalities on a statewide basis. As of Friday, it appears this week’s efforts have resulted in some preliminary progress, as the JFB has voted to include additional funding in the proposed budget to: 1) complete the widening and reconstructing of I-43 as requested; and 2) include one-time, supplemental local road funding for cities and villages in an amount equivalent to nearly $23 million. The proposed funding package now moves to the State Assembly and Wisconsin Senate for further consideration.
