Mequon Adds Fiber to its Diet
In May the Common Council awarded a contract to build out private leased fiber from the City’s network infrastructure to its existing IT business partner, IS Corp, and to the City’s Fire Station 2 facility. The private fiber run to these locations will be leased from Midwest Fiber, and they will provide support of the physical infrastructure. This expansion allows the City to discontinue its current Internet Service Provider (ISP) Spectrum Business, and move to IS Corp as the City’s new ISP, which also is a business based in Mequon.  This project is already underway, and most elements will be completed this Fall with full operations expected before the end of the year.  The direct-bury-fiber construction of this project can be seen along segments of Mequon, Port Washington, and Donges Bay roads.

When completed, this network will connect all City facilities plus connect the City to the City’s offsite backup and disaster recovery vendor, IS Corp, at fifty times the bandwidth (from 20MB to 1GB) for data backup and transfers; and includes five times higher speed internet bandwidth from the current 20MB to 100MB.  The Internet services provided by IS Corp are redundant to ensure resilient, always available connectivity.

Fire Department Installs New Equipment
The extractor (washing machine) the fire department purchased using GovQuote is installed and in service at station 2. An extractor is different than a conventional washing machine. A top loading washer takes years off the service life of firefighter protective clothing, the extractor is programmed to use water no hotter than 105 degrees Fahrenheit and spins out at a maximum G force of 100.
