Open Book Scheduled for Thursday, August 1
Open Book refers to a period of time, prior to the Board of Review, when the City’s assessment roll is open for examination. This is an opportune time to learn how property assessments were derived, what factors were considered and what types of records are kept regarding individual parcels. Additionally, property owners may review taxpayer listings and property sales data, discuss their property value with the Assessor and provide reasons for changing an assessment, if needed. This year, Open Book is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1 at City Hall. Once complete, any changes to the assessment roll must be made by the Board of Review, which meets at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3. To schedule an appointment, contact Assessment Technician Carolyn Vogel at (262) 236-2952 / cvogel@ci.mequon.wi.us.

Fire Department Joins “Sound the Alarm”
This week, the Fire Department established a partnership with the Red Cross of Southeastern Wisconsin by joining the “Sound the Alarm” program, whereby the Red Cross provides a supply of new smoke detectors and fire safety and emergency preparedness information to distribute to those in the community who may be without the protection of a smoke detector. The Red Cross provides top of the line, ten-year sealed battery smoke detectors for the Fire Department to install. This type of detector solves the two major problems with standard battery powered smoke detectors. First, the battery is good for the ten year life of the detector and never needs to be replaced. Second, the battery only works in the detector and cannot be removed to be used in other devices. These features ensure that the detector is operational for its entire service life and requires no further maintenance. All Mequon Firefighters and Police Officers have been notified of the availability of the smoke detectors and asked to help in the identification of parties who may need them. A formal press release and a series of social media announcements will be used to inform the public of the program and provide directions on how to access this service. For any further questions, please contact Deputy Chief Kurt Zellmann at the Mequon Fire Department.

Pool Attendance Ticks Up in July
The Mequon Community Pool opened this season on June 15. As of July 23, there have been a total of 5,612 patrons - 1,399 in June and 4,213 through July 24.  Though cooler weather caused the pool to close several times in June resulting in a 30% reduction of scheduled hours, the facility has fared much better this month with the onset of summer temperatures.  The highest one day total attendance so far this year was 401 patrons and as of July 23, pool pass sales total $42,490. Repairs have been completed to the Kiddie Pool, which is now open and Shrek will be shown during the pool’s annual movie night August 8. The pool will likely remain open through late August contingent upon staff availability; further pool information can be found by clicking here.
