Laundry Pod Challenge is Far From Safe
In a recent social media fad, teenagers are putting detergent pods in their mouths in what's being called the "Tide Pod Challenge." Ingredients in the pods include ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and polymers – a highly-toxic mix of detergent meant to wipe out dirt and grime. Manufacturers have been concerned about toddlers mistakenly ingesting them, but now teens are popping them on purpose and posting videos of the results online. Taking part in this challenge can result in serious bodily harm. Please view the Fire Department’s webpage for more details and laundry pod safety tips.

Thiensville Agrees to Allow Hoff Development Sewer Connection
On Monday evening, the Mayor and City Administrator attended the Thiensville Village Board meeting to convey information relating to the Common Council’s vote during the week of January 8 to direct a reallocation of capital funds for an extension of the Buntrock Water Main at the next meeting of the Mequon Water Utility Commission. Following review and discussion, the Village Board voted to allow developer David Hoff to connect to Thiensville’s sanitary sewer system, pending execution of an intergovernmental agreement between the municipalities. Presently, the Engineering Division is preparing an agreement that is similar to what has been executed for previous connection requests; it is anticipated that the agreement will be on the Water Utility Commission and Common Council meeting agendas for consideration in February.

City Working to Contract Temporary Building Inspection Services
The Community Development Department will be utilizing the services of a contract building inspector to ensure the Inspections Division has the capacity to continue building inspections in a timely fashion while the City works to fill the vacant building inspector position created by the departure of Mike Rakow. Once the contract is executed, the private inspector will work on behalf of the Inspections Division two days a week, until a full-time employee is hired to fill the vacancy.

News Graphic to Change Publication Dates
As of the week of January 28, the News Graphic will be changing its standard publication days from Tuesdays and Thursdays to Wednesday and Fridays. The City of Mequon will continue to issue notices in the News Graphic on their new publication dates.

Residents Reveal What Makes a Community to Recommend
Recommending a community to others may be the highest praise a resident can give. To find out what makes residents give such recommendations, the National Research Center conducted a study to find out what features in a community are linked to resident’s willingness from every generation to recommend their community to others. The study found that a community’s appearance and K-12 education system were two features that influenced all generations. Click here to learn more and view the study’s results.
