Staff Working to Complete Combined Public Works Facility Punch List Items
The Department of Public Works (DPW) continues to work with Kueny Architects and SMA Construction to complete punch list items at the Combined DPW Facility. The screening for the rooftop mechanicals was completed prior to Thanksgiving. Additionally this week, the manufacturer and installer of the floor tiles was on site to address corner peeling on some of the tiles. Also, the installation of a zone control system for the crane and hose reel motors is still pending due to delays in manufacturing and delivery. The remaining landscaping items will be addressed when warmer weather arrives this spring. Staff will continue to work through the punch list items and identify any issues that can be addressed under the building’s warranty. 

Mequon Police Department Now Accepting Applications for Citizens’ Police Academy
The Mequon Police Department will be hosting a Citizens’ Police Academy again in 2018 from Thursday, February 22 – Thursday, March 29. This six-week-long program will generally meet on Thursday evenings from approximately 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a few exceptions. The Academy is a great way to better understand the law enforcement and why Police do what they do. Participants receive hands-on training and class demonstrations on a wide variety of police topics, including use of force, defense and arrest tactics, use of a Taser, OWI detection, mock traffic stops, drug recognition, and firearms training. The K-9 unit will also make a presentation, showcasing K-9 Iron and his abilities.

Classes are held at the Mequon Police Department and are free of charge to people who live/work in Mequon or Thiensville.  Class size is limited to 20 participants. Fire Station Dormitory Remodel Finished
The Fire Station dormitory remodeling projects budgeted for 2017 is completed.  In addition to the $30,000 that was prevoulsy allocated for this project, there were door and hardware donations from Fillinger’s Hardware, design consultation and architectural plans provided by the Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club, and labor that was provided by Lakeside Development.  Each station had a single large room with five beds.  The large rooms were converted into induvial rooms with locks for Fire Department employees.

Communications Tower Under Construction at River Barn Park
In 2016, the City entered into a lease agreement with SBA Towers IX, LLC (SBA) at River Barn Park for construction of a communications tower. The River Barn Park location was chosen to host the tower to avoid an undue proliferation of sites within the community. Construction has begun and is anticipated to be completed in spring.  

City Inspector Takes Next Step in Career with Village of Fox Point
Inspector Mike Rakow will be parting ways with the City of Mequon to take the next step in his career with the Fox Point as the Village’s Building Inspector. Mike became a full-time inspector in April of 2013. Prior to that Mike served as City’s part-time Code Enforcement Officer, as well as a volunteer with the Fire Department. Mike’s last day will be Friday, January 19. The City is grateful to Mr. Rakow for his years of service and wishes him the best of luck in all future endeavors. 

New Employee Joins the Buildings Maintenance Division
On Monday, January 9, Daniel Oppermann joined the City staff as a new Building Maintenance Worker. In his position, Dan will be responsible for providing routine maintenance and custodial services to all City buildings and properties, as well as winter road maintenance.  Mr. Oppermann comes to the City of Mequon with over 15 years of experience. Most recently, Dan worked for J.W. Speaker Corporation where he was employed as a buildings maintenance worker. Mr. Oppermann holds several certifications ranging from Boiler Operation, Maintenance & Safety to Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
