City Website Receives Accessibility Updates
New federal Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) have been released in an effort to improve the usability of websites for individuals with disabilities, as well as advance requirements established by the American with Disability Act and the Telecommunications Act. These new standards are more stringent than those that were in effect when the City first launched its website. Some of the updates implemented so far include: HTML code restructuring to improve compatibility with assistive technology, adding “alt tags,” which are words or phrases that tell website users the nature or content of an image or document, and improvements to how the website displays on tables. The City’s website vendor, Aha Consulting, will conduct additional tests in the near future to ensure the website is fully compliant with WCAG requirements.
