Crews Complete Bypass Pumping of the Sanitary Sewer System
Due to the heavy rainfall recorded earlier this week, the City experienced overflows at multiple lift stations, requiring bypass pumping of the sanitary sewer system. Affected lift stations were located at Circle Drive south of Island Drive, Fieldwood Road south of Highland Road, at La Porte Road and Riverland Drive and near Wildwood Drive north of Ranch Court. Additional bypass pumping occurred at the intersection of Brookdale Drive and Clover Lane. This bypassing began late Sunday night on August 26 and continued into Monday, August 27. Additional overflow bypass pumping continued on Tuesday, August 28 due to saturated conditions and more rainfall received that morning. Bypass pumping is critical to prevent basement backups and avoid potential private property damage. Pursuant to state regulations, Mequon has reported these bypass pumping and sanitary sewer overflow events to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and outlined the City’s corrective actions. Once completed, the East Trunk Sewer project and the associated reduction of clear water inflow and infiltration will reduce the need for bypass pumping to be initiated during future wet weather events.

Board of Review Conducts Annual Meeting
The annual Board of Review meeting was held on Thursday, August 30.  This Board reviews and approves the 2018 assessment roll, hears objections to the valuation of residential and/or commercial assessments and personal property assessments. After Open Book, which was held on August 1-2, 885 letters were sent to residents notifying them of a change of assessment. Four came forward to appeal their assessments before the Board, all residential.  After hearing the appeals, the Board reduced the assessment of three properties and upheld the assessment of one.

Milwaukee River Water Levels Continue to Recede, Yet More Rain Expected
Over this past week, Milwaukee River water levels rose to a point where some homeowners, businesses, and commuters were impacted by flooding in certain areas of the City. As of late Friday, water levels on the Milwaukee River had dropped from a weekly high of 12.2 feet to approximately 11 feet. However, more rain has been forecasted over the next several days, which may again lead to a rise in water levels and result in additional instances of flooding. City staff will continue to monitor conditions locally throughout the weekend and into next week, and take action as may be appropriate if additional flooding occurs. Those interested in current water levels on the Milwaukee River can click here to view the National Weather Service’s Pioneer Road monitoring station data. Additionally, the National Weather Service also provides free online resources on what to do after a flood. Please click here to learn more.
