Cedarburg Road Construction Continues
Starting last week, Cedarburg Road from the Village of Thiensville to the City of Cedarburg was closed for road construction. Prior to the road being milled and repaved, contractors will be working on other projects in preparation for the road resurfacing. These projects, which include new safety islands near the railway and guard rails, are being completed in sections throughout the project area and are being done to better the safety of Cedarburg Road. The project has a completion deadline of November 15 but is anticipated to be done earlier. Please see the attached map to view the project area and the posted detour.

Fire Department Fights Two Structure Fires
The Mequon Fire Department responded to two structure fires on Thursday, July 18. The first was on Hallow Lane. A neighbor spotted smoke coming from the roof of a home after a lightning strike about 8:00 A.M. The residents were evacuated prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. The second call came in about 10:30 A.M. on Freistadt Road. A passerby spotted smoke coming from a two-car garage attached to a single-story home. Before the Fire Department arrived, the fire had spread up the siding of the home and into the wall between the house and garage. A water shuttle was set up to fight the fire because there are no hydrants in the area. No one was home at the time of the fire. Again the cause of the fire was most likely a lightning strike. The fires at both incidents caused extensive damage and will cause the homeowners to be displaced for some time. There were no injuries at either fire and mutual aid was called to assist with extinguishment.

Fire Department Overcomes Back-Up Ambulance Mechanical Issues
Late last week the oldest Mequon Fire Department Ambulance was noticed by staff to be running rough and producing excessive amounts of exhaust smoke. The ambulance was quickly removed from service and taken to the Fleet Division of the Public Works Department for diagnosis. Unfortunately, it was determined that the engine suffered a failure that necessitated removal and replacement of the engine. Due to the extended timeline required to complete the engine repair, the Fire Department determined that the rental of a backup ambulance would be the most prudent course of action. The Fire Department took delivery of the ambulance on Friday, August 2. By renting a reserve ambulance in the short term, the Fire Department can ensure that in the event of a failure of either of the two remaining front line ambulances the Fire Department would still be able to deploy the minimum two ambulances needed to adequately protect the City.

Peddler’s License Required to Sell Wares Door to Door
Summer months are the time of year you may have someone come to your door to sell their wares. The City of Mequon allows door to door sales of merchandise and services with the issuance of a Peddler’s License. Each licensee has undergone a background check conducted by the Police Department and approved by the Finance-Personnel Committee prior to issuance of the license. While selling, a photo ID is required to be visible, and the City-issued license must be carried and produced if requested by the homeowner. This year, the City has issued licenses to businesses selling products such as educational books, home design services, pest control, and investment advice, among others. Prior to the license being issued, each applicant is given a list of the City guidelines, which include:

  • Selling is to take place between 9:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M. Monday through Saturday.

  • Sellers cannot enter the rear yard or approach a rear door.

  • Sellers cannot approach a home if there is a no solicitors sign or similar sign is displayed.

  • Sellers cannot make false or misleading statements concerning their product.

If you think a peddler has violated any of these provisions, please contact the Police Department on their non-emergency number 262-242-3500. For a full list of regulations of transient merchants, solicitors and peddlers view the City Municipal Code by clicking here.
