History

The City of Mequon, in partnership with the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, founded the Mequon Nature Preserve. The first parcel was purchased in 2002 and the most recent purchase was in 2017.

Status

Parkland Classification: Nature Preserve

Stewardship Group:  In 2011 the City of Mequon leased Mequon Nature Preserve to Mequon Nature Preserve, Inc., a non-profit friends group. It is a charitable organization that provides environmental education and land restoration programs.

Stewardship Plan: Mequon Nature Preserve, Inc. carries out a comprehensive stewardship program including removal of invasive species, management of existing forest remnants, and restoration of a beech maple forest and wetlands that existed prior to European settlement that began in the early 1800’s.

Site Analysis: Mequon Nature Preserve, Inc. has conducted extensive site analyses including surveys of its flora and fauna and extensive soil borings as part of an effort to restore the site’s hydrology that existed in the early 1800s.
