Committee Established to Review City Planning Policies
Mayor Wirth has proposed the establishment of a Planning Commission subcommittee to address and analyze public policy matters facing the community, with an eye towards forwarding recommendations to the Commission and Common Council. The subcommittee meetings will allow the Planning Commission to maintain its regular meeting agendas for development projects seeking approvals and advancing through the process.

The subcommittee will discuss and prioritize a work program, including topics such as East Growth, Port Washington Road design standards and conservation subdivision regulations.  The representatives include the following Planning Commission members:

  • Mayor Wirth
  • Brian Parrish
  • Daniel Gentges
  • James Schaefer
  • John Stoker
  • Stephanie Hawley

Meetings will be held the 4th Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. and are open to public. Other Commissioners, elected officials and City representatives are welcome to attend. The subcommittee’s first meeting will take place on August 5, and a full schedule of subcommittee meetings for the remainder of 2019 is included in this month’s Planning Commission packet.

East Trunk Sewer Project Nearing Completion
The East Trunk Sewer project is ahead of schedule and remains on budget.  All of the relief sewer pipe has been installed and next week staff anticipates substantial completion once the third and final diversion structure becomes active.  The contractor has completed restoration activities throughout various sections of the project limits that have included pavement replacement and landscaping; however additional restoration is still required.  Staff will be monitoring the restored areas and continuing to coordinate with the contractor where additional follow up attention is required.   The contract for this construction project had an original completion target of Spring 2020 and staff is pleased that the responsible contractor, Minger Construction, experienced limited issues during the project.

As part of the East Trunk Sewer project, staff has continued to evaluate East Growth Area sanitary sewer service extension scenarios. Originally staff looked at a full sewer extension from Highland Road to Pioneer Road, however SUDC policy direction is necessary to address cost implications of implementing sewers beyond the current SSA. Staff is preparing design options and corresponding cost estimates for various build-out scenarios necessary for future site developments that would also require a sanitary sewer service area amendment.

Civic Campus Parking Lot Project Advances
Reconstruction of the parking lot that serves City Hall and the Civic Campus continues to remain on schedule. The project has reached a point as of Thursday, July 18 whereby the entire lot is now closed. The contractor has started milling the surface of the parking lot in front of City Hall and will start excavation on the front lot shortly thereafter. In the interim, parking is available at the Library and along Cedarburg Road. Those doing business at City Hall will still be able to access the front doors throughout construction, but will not be able to park in the lot adjacent to City Hall. There will be access to two (2) ADA parking spaces for those with active ADA parking permits. The lot will reopen as soon as the work is completed, but no later than August 30. Also enclosed is a sample from letters that were sent this week to Christ Alone Church, Chase Bank and Riversite Commons, thanking each of the property owners for allowing City staff to utilize these respective properties for offsite parking during the course of the project.
